Urgent Appeal: Help Rebuild Jamaica’s Coastal Guardians

In November 2025, Hurricane Melissa tore through two of Jamaica's community-run fish sanctuaries—destroying boats, offices, and the equipment that wardens use to protect sea turtles, manatees, and coral reefs every day. Now these sanctuaries need our help to get back on their feet.

A Hurricane Hit Jamaica's Coastal Guardians. Help Rebuild What Was Lost.

Although many have moved on, communities in Jamaica are still rebuilding after Hurricane Melissa devastated the island in November 2025.

Two community-based fish sanctuaries— Galleon Fish Sanctuary in St. Elizabeth and Bluefields Bay Fish Sanctuary in Westmoreland —were hit directly by storm surge and flooding, halting operations and destroying offices, boats, and essential equipment.

These sanctuaries are lifelines for marine biodiversity, local livelihoods, and coastal resilience.

Their mangroves, seagrass beds, and coral reefs shelter fish, sea turtles, manatees, rays, sharks, and countless other species. Sanctuary wardens patrol daily, monitor wildlife, engage the community, and support scientific research, including long-term sea turtle programs and coral reef monitoring. Restoring basic operations will not only protect critical ecosystems but also help wardens recover their livelihoods.
