Summary
Re:wild is seeking a Species Communications Manager to serve as the primary communications lead for our species recovery work with a global network of partners and donors. The Species Communications Manager will help develop and implement communications plans and strategies; work with program staff and partners to identify updates, stories and gather assets; and coordinate and create content, such as social media posts, blog posts, video scripts and related web content for an exciting new species recovery initiative.
This person will be responsible for helping establish messaging and strategy, curating stories from implementing partners, working with photographers and videographers to gather assets, crafting engaging written content, creating engaging visual content (both videos and graphics), working directly with Re:wild team members and partners, and feeding into dedicated social media channels and broader communications platforms to highlight stories about species recovery, the people behind the efforts, and the benefits to the health of the planet.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Help develop and guide the execution of communications strategies and plans for programmatic partnerships focused on species recovery. This includes maintaining an editorial calendar for social media planning, developing top-line messaging and targeted messages for specific audiences, cultivating influencer partnerships, collecting and analyzing social media metrics, and adjusting strategy in response to new developments and data to ensure we are effectively reaching the target audiences.
- Ensure a regular drumbeat of engaging content for social media. Working closely with the species project team, write, create, coordinate and manage social media posts across the project’s social platforms at a regular cadence (Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, Blue Sky and TikTok) and develop social media toolkits for amplification by partners and influencers. This includes working with Re:wild’s broader communications team, a broader communications working group, Re:wild’s programmatic teams, and on-the-ground partners to get the information needed to write posts and get approval from all necessary parties.
- Coordinate with web developers and other vendors as necessary to maintain the website.
- Develop strategy for email updates for those who sign up.
- When necessary, help coordinate professional photographers and videographers to get assets in the field or to license assets we may need for social media, website, or press.
- Create social media videos and graphics, including carousels and infographics. Work with graphic designers and video editors as needed on larger, more high-stakes/high-visibility stories and projects.
- Support the media relations team by identifying upcoming milestones and newsworthy species recovery announcements, and helping coordinate asset collection and quotes.
- Organize regular alliance/partnership calls and communications to stay up-to-date on new stories and developments and ensure minutes are shared to keep stakeholders aligned. Stay in regular contact with communications professionals and programmatic staff at key partner organizations.
- Provide monthly social media metrics reports that can inform future strategy, while staying on the pulse of trends across social media platforms to identify opportunities for engagement and growth.
- Help develop and implement creative content campaigns, including regular features, related to species recovery work.
Competencies & Qualifications
- A background in wildlife conservation or a similar applicable field of science.
- 5+ years in a communications-related field.
- Top-notch storytelling and social media skills (including caption writing).
- Proficient in graphic design and video editing.
- Experience developing and adapting content for a variety of platforms.
- Proven experience with storytelling in the field of wildlife conservation or a similar field.
- Able to use AirTable or have experience with a similar project management tool.
- Must have “hustle.” You’ll be working with a small but mighty team on a major global project, so you must be proactive and pleasantly persistent.
- Commitment to and passion for Re:wild’s mission, vision, and values.
- Hours: The position may occasionally require working outside of normal business hours to engage with staff located in different time zones around the world.
- Travel: Only occasional travel for events support, team retreats, etc.
Compensation and Benefits
- This is a full-time, exempt position.
- Projected salary range of $80,000-90,000, with the final determination to be made commensurate with the candidate’s experience.
- Re:wild provides medical, dental, vision, short- and long-term disability, and life insurance, with Re:wild covering between 65% and 100% of premiums, depending on plan and dependent coverage. . Re:wild also offers a 403b retirement plan with up to 3% match after a year of employment.
- Re: wild observes 16 paid holidays each calendar year. Full-time employees can also accrue the following annually: up to 15 days of vacation leave, 12 days of illness leave, and 2 volunteer days.
